What inspired or interested you about your field of study? And why did you choose Oregon State University?
I am passionate about understanding how children grow and learn, especially within the context of their families, schools and communities.
Studying human development and family sciences at Oregon State felt like the perfect fit due to the university's dedication to research, real-world application and the opportunity to work closely with children and families within the educational system.
What are you doing in your internship?
As an intern at the OSU Child Development Center, I have the opportunity to be a member of the classroom teaching team, working alongside students in a highly interactive and positive manner.
It is my responsibility to be an active member of each student's early educational experience by engaging with them in developmentally appropriate and entertaining activities throughout the school day.
I also strive to work one-on-one with students and their families to find methods of learning that best fit their unique strengths, needs and goals.
What do you see as the greatest value of your internship?
My experiences within the OSU Child Development Center have allowed me to gain valuable experience supporting children and families within a comprehensive educational setting, as well as create relationships with skilled educators, HDFS professionals, and children and their families within the community.
These experiences have deepened my understanding of the importance of providing relationship-based, culturally responsive early education.
As an intern teacher at the OSU Child Development Center, I have strengthened my skills in collaboration, observation, and intentional curriculum development to support the diverse needs of young children and their families.
What do you think of your experience at OSU?
My experience at Oregon State has been wonderful. It truly feels like a second home. Corvallis is special, OSU is special, and so is the HDFS program here.
Have you received a scholarship? If so, how has it affected your life and your studies?
I have received scholarships at OSU that have significantly alleviated the pressures of being a full-time student, allowing me to pursue additional internship and volunteer opportunities. I am a recipient of the Finley Academic Scholarship, as well as the Margaret Wolcott Double Scholarship.
What are your post-college dreams?
After college, I hope to settle into a career dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in my community, whatever that may be.
I feel confident and passionate in early education, so I could see myself thriving in roles such as an assistant teacher, family resource coordinator or counselor.
I also aspire to go back to school for a master’s degree in speech-language pathology or public administration in the future.
