Public health undergraduate Christina Young-Valdovinos discusses her research on Latinx food security in Linn-Benton communities and her goal to become a pediatrician after completing her studies.

What sparked your interest in health?

I have always been interested in our country’s health care, and I knew I could make a difference if I studied public health, especially by going through a broader route that would teach me more.

Why are you interested in research?

I am interested in research so that I can help out my community. I will be creating advocacy tools for Latinx community members in order to improve the healthy eating context and address health inequities.

What research will you be working on and with whom?

I am working on a research project that utilizes data from the Linn-Benton Food Security data collected in 2022-2023. The data includes surveys, interviews and community forums. The goal of this project is to address food-related health inequities within the Latinx community. My mentor, Tina Dodge, will be assisting me and another student in this project.

What are your future career and/or academic plans?

After my undergraduate degree, my goal is either to go to medical school or physician assistant school. My hope is to one day become a pediatrician because I would love to help people, especially children.
