Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD

Sharfstein, is a physician and the current Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has a diverse background in public health, politics, and academia.

Sharfstein served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from 2011 to 2014 and was the Principal Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 2009 to 2011. He has also been the Commissioner of Health for Baltimore City and a health policy advisor to Congressman Henry A. Waxman.

Sharfstein is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Public Administration. He is known for his work on various public health topics, including the opioid crisis, healthcare policy, and child poverty. He is the author of several publications, including "The Public Health Crisis Survival Guide: Leadership and Management in Trying Times" and co-author of "The Opioid Epidemic: What Everyone Needs to Know."
