Physical Activity Levels and Obesity Status of Oregon Rural Elementary School Children (PDF)

Children living in low-income, rural areas are at a disproportionately higher risk of overweight and obesity compared to children living in better-resourced, less rural areas.

This poster details research efforts to collect and understand height, weight, and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels amongst rural Oregon elementary children using Walk4Life pedometers.

Childhood overweight and obesity is a significant issue facing communities throughout the nation. Obesity in children is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases and mental health issues, as well as poor academic performance. Research suggests that youth living in rural communities have higher rates of obesity and overweight than their urban counterparts.

This poster details efforts led by field faculty to inspire positive change amongst families, schools, and communities of rural environments.

 
Preventing Obesity in the Rural Populations: Visualizing the Need for Cross-Program Collaborations in Research, Education, and Extension to Address the Local Food and Physical Activity Systems (PDF)

Beginning summer 2013, community members were trained by Extension educators to use the Rural-Community Food and Physical Activity (R-CFPA) Environmental Audit tool to assess the actual (vs. perceived) rural community food & physical activity resources. Survey of the locally available food and physical activity resources were conducted using camera enabled GPS units.

Measuring the School Nutrition and Physical Activity (SNPA) Environment: A Case for Assessing School Resources and Readiness for Changing the Context to Address Child Obesity (PDF)

Elementary schools are key sites for delivering nutrition and physical activity education and promoting healthy behaviors. Most school-based programs model outcomes at the level of the individual and evaluate impacts at the level of changes in students' knowledge, abilities and behaviors. A public health approach to promoting healthy habits focuses efforts on changing the context of the behavioral environment to make healthy options the default choice.
