Abstract

This study examines how wages, refundable tax credits and government assistance combine and interact, and how that determines whether a household can meet basic living expenses. It also considers how location and household composition (number and ages of household members) figure into that equation. While it does not propose or evaluate any particular policy or program, the simulation of various household scenarios provides important insights into how wages, taxes and government assistance (such as Employment Related Day Care) can interact in a way that can help or hinder a household’s ability to meet basic expenses.
