Occupational Safety and Health Laboratory
Laurel Kincl, PhD
Professor
Dr. Kincl received her MS in Industrial Hygiene and PhD in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics from the University of Cincinnati. Before joining OSU in 2011, Dr. Kincl was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain for two years and a Research Associate at the Labor Education and Research Center at the University of Oregon from 2003-2009. Her research focuses on quantifying, communicating and controlling occupational and environmental exposures to health and safety hazards. She has a particular interest in reducing adverse health outcomes with targeted interventions.
Amelia Vaughan, MLIS
Project Manager
Amelia is a 3rd generation librarian with over a decade of experience managing science outreach programs. She helps to manage the lab’s many research projects, including collecting data about injuries in the commercial fisheries. She holds a B.S in Health Promotion and Education from Oregon State and a Master’s in Library and Information Science from San Jose State.
Cherry Yang, MS
PhD Student
Liu Yang is a third year PhD student in Public Health, concentrated on environmental and occupational health. She holds a B.E. in Chemical Engineering and M.S. in Environmental Engineering. As a professional SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) consultant in her past years of work in China, she helped companies in various industries to improve their onsite occupational safety and health. Her research interest is to identify occupational and behavioral risk factors associated with work-related injury patterns and workers’ health to guide better interventions and practices in workplace.
Laura Syron, MPH
PhD Student
Laura Syron is a PhD student in the Environmental and Occupational Health program. As a Graduate Research Assistant, she currently studies occupational injuries in the commercial fishing and fish processing industry. A fifth-generation Oregonian, she has a BA from the University of Oregon, with majors in Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish, and a minor in Latin American Studies. In 2010, she earned a Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) from OSU, with a focus on International Health. During the MPH program, she interned for Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW). She worked for law firms in Alaska and Oregon for a few years before returning to OSU for the EOH program.
Richie Evoy, MPH
PhD Student, Graduate Research Assistant
Richie Evoy is a PhD student in the Environmental and Occupational Health program at Oregon State University. He holds a B.S. in Human Physiology from Seattle Pacific University and a Master's of Public Health in the Environmental Health Sciences department at Columbia University. As a native Oregonian, Richie is interested in examining and characterizing the use of pesticides in the Oregon cannabis industry.
Hayley Strenke
MPH student, Graduate Research Assistant
Hayley is a Master's student in the Environmental and Occupational Health track at Oregon State University. As an undergraduate, she studied Public Health- Health Promotion/ Health Behavior and Environmental Safety and Health at Oregon State. Hayley is a Graduate Research Assistant who helps with various projects in the lab, including the FLIPP and SAVE studies.
Melissa Myers
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Melissa Myers is a senior majoring in Public Health with an option in Health Promotion Health Behavior and a minor in Environmental Safety and Health. She was recently hired in Dr. Laurel Kincl’s lab to assist with research focused on occupational safety in the commercial fishing industry and she looks forward to contributing to this project. Melissa is currently applying to get into OSU’s MPH graduate program in the discipline of Environmental and Occupational Health. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys traveling, cooking and watching indie films.
Bettemariam Rooney
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Bettemariam is a freshman student at Oregon State University working to earn a Biology with pre-med option degree. Being a member of the STEM Leaders Program allows her to gain research experience as an undergraduate. Bettemariam helps with the SAVE studies project.
Miles Havard
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Miles is currently an undergraduate in his senior year at Oregon State University studying Public Health: Health Promotion
and Health Behaviors and is also completing a minor in Environmental Safety and Health. Miles is an Undergraduate Research Assistant working with Dr. Laurel Kincl on the Safety Voice for Ergonomics program, and expects to graduate in 2017 following the completion of a Public Health and Environmental Safety and Health internship
