Red Light, Purple Light Self-Regulation Intervention

Red Light, Purple Light (RLPL) Intervention

The Kindergarten Readiness Research Program

The Red Light, Purple Light Self-Regulation Intervention focuses on a series of music- and movement-based circle time games that can be used to promote young children's self-regulation at home and at school.

RLPL Impact Report

The RLPL intervention was recently reviewed by the US Dept of Ed’s What Works Clearinghouse, and has been identified as a Promising Program by Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development.

The RLPL intervention has been used and shared in the following five countries: the United States, Norway, Turkey, New Zealand, and Kenya.

Red Light, Purple Light: A Self-Regulation Intervention Program

The current project tests the initial efficacy of Red Light, Purple Light (RLPL), a self-regulation intervention that was developed as part of an IES grant.

Researchers will examine if access to one of two versions of RLPL, (self-regulation [SR] or SR+ math/literacy [SR+]), compared to a wait-list control (WLC) condition relates to gains in children's self-regulation, math, and literacy skills in preschool and six months later.

Self-Regulation Book

Teachers and parents of preschoolers have a new resource from Oregon State University professor Megan

McClelland and OSU graduate Shauna Tominey, whose new book demonstrates how to help 3-to-6-year-olds flourish during their formative years.

The book offers early childhood education teachers the latest research, a wide variety of hands-on activities to help children learn and practice self-regulation techniques, as well as tips and tools for integrating those activities into early learning settings.

“Stop, Think, Act” is also useful for parents of children ages 3-6 who are looking for ways to help prepare their children for schools, said McClelland, a nationally-recognized expert in child development.
