Is occupational therapy right for you?

Thinking about occupational therapy but want to learn more before you commit? Here's a look at what OTs do, how to become one and what the career path looks like.

What does an occupational therapist do?

Occupational therapists work with people of all ages to help them perform the activities of daily life, such as dressing, cooking, eating and workplace tasks. OTs often focus on fine and gross motor function, building skills such as dexterity, coordination and visual acuity, as well as cognitive skills.

Common areas of practice include:

  • Rehabilitation: Helping people regain everyday skills after an injury or illness, including using adaptive equipment or assistive technology
  • Supporting independence: Helping people with disabilities develop the skills to live and work in their communities
  • Early intervention: Working with children who have developmental delays to build fine and gross motor, cognitive and social-emotional skills

How do I become an occupational therapist?

OT programs are offered at both the master's and doctoral level. A bachelor's degree is required for admission.

Master's programs typically take two to three years; doctoral programs take approximately three years. All programs require at least six months of supervised fieldwork, and graduates must pass a national board exam to become licensed.

What is the difference between an OT and an OTA?

Occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) work under the supervision of a licensed OT to deliver therapy to patients. OTAs earn a two-year associate degree, while OTs complete a master's or doctoral program after earning a bachelor's degree.

If you're planning to pursue a four-year degree at Oregon State, the OT path is the more relevant route.

What is the job outlook and average salary for occupational therapists?

The current job outlook and median wage is available through the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
