Briefly describe your role and how you contribute to the college community.
As an academic advisor within the College of Health, my hope is to serve our students as professionally, effectively and compassionately as I can, helping them confidently navigate their educational journeys, confront barriers and pursue their aspirations and opportunities for growth.
To this end, I’m grateful to have an amazing array of kind, intelligent and helpful colleagues within the Office of Student Success and the entire college. Our collaboration is essential.
What’s something your colleagues probably don’t know about you and might be surprised to learn?
Growing up, I was a massive professional wrestling fan, and though the depth of my affinity has lessened a bit these days, I still keep track of some of my favorite performers from time to time.
I’ve always admired wrestlers – the characters they embody, the risks they take, their athleticism and ceaseless dedication – and I’m grateful for the positive memories they’ve given me as a fan over the years.
What are some of your interests and/or hobbies?
My primary conviction has always been writing poetry, and my related passion is co-editing the online literary magazine my friend and I created in 2012.
I also enjoy writing in other genres (e.g., science writing and nonfiction), reading, exercising in the gym, volunteering at Heartland Humane Thrift Shop, and going on walks and hikes in the forest to clear my head.
Further, I love learning about languages and cultures, and I’ve been fortunate to have been taught an abundance of valuable lessons from incredible people across the globe through my travels.
What’s the best part about working in the College of Health?
There are several pros when it comes to working in the College of Health, but engaging with my students and colleagues is the main one.
I chose academic advising (and teaching before that) to connect with students, learn about their goals, and help them succeed. I appreciate the opportunity to get to know and learn from our students as well as fellow faculty and staff.
Ultimately, it’s heartening that helping others is a highly regarded value manifested in the college mission, values and work that students and faculty accomplish.
