Academic interests

Sunday is committed to the principle that “No mother should die during childbirth” and aims to make significant contributions to this crucial area of healthcare. With the maternal health crisis in his country reflecting a staggering maternal mortality rate of 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births, as well as the pronounced disparities in maternal deaths among rural and urban populations and various racial-ethnic groups in the USA, he is determined to explore the underlying factors contributing to these issues and to investigate potential innovative solutions. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, he welcomes collaborations with other researchers. By joining forces, these interdisciplinary efforts can lead to meaningful advancements in reducing maternal mortality and enhancing maternal health outcomes on a global scale.

Biography

Sunday Adetunji (he/him) holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and has had postgraduate residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. His journey into medicine has been profoundly influenced by personal experiences, particularly the loss of two siblings to complications related to sickle cell disease when he was just ten years old. Furthermore, the tragic death of a cousin due to peripartum hemorrhage during his university years ignited his passion for enhancing maternal health outcomes. These experiences have inspired his commitment to pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology with a focus on Maternal Health at Oregon State University.
