Handbook for parents and families - English

Kids Handbook / Guía de niños

Above you will find the recording of the event Summer Kick Off "Empowering Parents & Families: Introduction: How to get involved in your child(ren)’s education starting in kindergarten and advocate for their academic success" hosted on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023. In addition to the recording you will also find a copy of the Kids Handbook and digital copy of the Parent and Family Handbook that was provided to participants. This digital copy is a living document that will continue to be updated as new resources are found.

This event was designed to provide parents and families of entering kindergarten-aged children an introduction on advocating for their child's education. Participants received information on their child's educational rights, their rights as parents/guardians, strategies on how to effectively communicate with teachers and school administrators, and how to collaborate with the school team to develop a plan that meets their child's unique needs. The presentation also provided strategies for supporting kindergarten readiness and success, such as identifying and addressing potential learning challenges and finding resources to support academic and social-emotional development. By the end of the event, the goal was for parents and families to feel empowered to take an active role in their child's education and advocate for their needs in kindergarten and beyond.

Families are their children’s first and most important teachers. Partnering hand in hand with families is critical to make sure community resources and programs support children and families effectively.

As Oregon continues to expand early childhood and parenting programs, Early Learning Hubs and Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative (OPEC) Hubs are creating Parent and Family Leadership Councils to welcome families as essential partners in their communities.

The OPEC Team at Oregon State University provides support for parent and family leadership development in partnership with Early Learning Hubs and OPEC Hubs.
