College of Health Emergency/Hardship Aid Eligibility Guidelines

The College of Health (COH) emergency funding is for undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking financial assistance due to temporary hardship or unforeseen emergencies. Decisions regarding the award and disbursement of funds are made on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility requirements

Outside of extenuating circumstances, successful recipients must have met the following eligibility requirements:

  • Completed the emergency grant request form and demonstrated that financial hardship is impacting learning.
  • Seeking a degree offered in the COH and enrolled at Oregon State University.
  • In good academic and good judicial standing, or can explain the circumstances and have a plan developed in conjunction with their academic advisor to work toward achieving good academic standing.
  • Not a previous recipient of a COH emergency grant in the same academic year.
  • Financial need that has arisen from an unexpected emergency such as those described below.

Examples of emergencies

Examples of emergencies to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Serious illness, or emergency medical expenses
  • Travel expenses due to death or illness of a family member
  • Homelessness or facing homelessness
  • Unexpected loss of transportation to/from school
  • Food insecurities

  • Replacement of essential personal belongings impacting academic learning due to fire, natural disaster or unforeseen events
  • Safety needs including the needs of victims of domestic violence, or other extenuating circumstances

Expenses NOT covered by the emergency grant

In the absence of an emergency such as those outlined above, COH Emergency funding will not cover items, such as the following:

  • Tuition, academic fees, balance repayment, etc.
  • Study abroad, internships, experiential learning, engagement activities, clubs, etc.
  • Personal bills such as current credit card, cable, cell phone, memberships, parking, etc.
  • Fees and fines such as parking tickets, library fines, printing, etc.
  • Funds for the replacement of lost or stolen items such as cell phone, car, laptop, etc.

Application process

Students in need of emergency financial assistance are encouraged to meet with a financial advisor in the Office of Financial Aid, Center for Advancing Financial Education (CAFE), and/or a team member of the Basic Needs Center.

The emergency funds are administered in the Office of Student Success in the COH. Completed applications will be reviewed according to the guidelines mentioned above. A response to emergency grant requests is typically provided within 5-7 business days of receipt.

Most funds granted range from $300 - $1,000 depending on the circumstances and, unfortunately, not all requests are funded due to limited resources. The award disbursement process will follow the guidelines set forth by the Office of Financial Aid and Student Account Services. Please note that emergency funds may affect a student's financial aid package. The emergency grant offer letter will ask and encourage students to contact the Office of Financial Aid before accepting the offer.
