Rethinking Recess: Creating Safe and Inclusive Playtime for All Children in School

Recess has been overlooked as an essential part of the elementary school experience, with major implications for how well schools serve all students equitably and responsively. Because of its potential to support students’ social and emotional learning and physical activity, London contends that recess should be designed intentionally with attention to safety, health, and engagement.
Rebecca London earned her PhD in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University. She currently is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California in Santa Cruz.
Her research focuses on understanding the challenges faced by disadvantaged children and youth and the ways that communities and community organizations support young people to be healthy and successful.
She is the author of the recently published book Rethinking Recess: Creating Safe and Inclusive Playtime for All Children in School.
