Using Data from Existing Studies in our Research: Sources, Potential, Pitfalls, and Some Results

David Batty, DSc, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London and a former Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. He received his DSc at the University of Edinburgh and his PhD at the University of Bristol both in Epidemiology.
As a chronic disease and injury epidemiologist, the objective of his research is to understand how social, psychological, biological, behavioural and genetic factors from across the life course, and between generations, influence the risk of chronic diseases of major public health importance in adulthood: cardiovascular disease, selected cancers, and mental illness. As an investigator on three cohort studies, he has roles in designing new data collection in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, the Whitehall II Study, and the National Child Development Study (NCDS/1958 birth cohort).The ultimate aim of his body of research is disease prevention.
