The Oregon Poverty Measure: Creation and Preliminary Findings

February 22, 2019

David Rothwell, PhD, MSW, is an Assistant Professor in Human Development and Family Sciences joining the College of Public Health & Human Sciences at Oregon State University in 2016. Dr. Rothwell received his MSW at Tulane University and a Ph.D. in social welfare from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National University of Singapore.

David's research interests are poverty, families, and social policy. His goal is to better understand the mechanisms driving social and economic inequalities. Current methods for measuring poverty have conceptual and empirical limitations, especially for understanding poverty in suburban and rural communities. In this seminar he will describe a two-year project designed to develop a more valid measure of poverty in Oregon.

Leanne Giordono, PhD, is a postdoctoral Scholar on the Oregon Poverty Measurement Project in the College of Public Health & Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She received her Master in Public Affairs from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School and her doctorate from the School of Public Policy at OSU. She has over 15 years of experience conducting program evaluation and applied research for government agencies, non-profit organizations, and foundations.
