Quadriceps functions and Landing mechanics
"The Influence of Quadriceps Rate of Torque Development and Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition on Knee Landing Mechanics during Different Landing Tasks in ACL Reconstructed Females"
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to determine:
- if greater explosive quadriceps strength in females who have had an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is associated with safer landing strategies; and
- if a reduced ability to maximally voluntarily contract the quadriceps is related to lesser explosive strength.
Research involves
The research involves one testing session (2 hours and 40 minutes, Incentive: $ 30 USD).
To qualify
To qualify to participate in this study, participants need to:
- Be a female between the ages of 16-30
- Not be pregnant
- Regularly participate in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity (i.e., at a heart rate of about 64 - 95% of your maximum)
- Be free of any current injuries or illnesses that limit your ability to perform your regular physical activity
- Have had no lower extremity or low back injuries in the previous 6 months that limited your regular physical activity
- Have no neurological and cardiopulmonary disorder
- Minor participants ( < 18 years of age) must reside with their legal guardian
Participant Categories
Study participants must also fit into one of the following two categories:
ACL reconstructed (ACLR) participant
To qualify to participate as an ACL reconstructed (ACLR) participant, you need to:
- Have had ACLR on just a single knee
- Have been cleared for unrestricted activities by the orthopedic surgeon who performed the ACLR within the past two years
- Have no history of low back, hip, knee, or ankle surgery except for ACLR and up to one subsequent minor operation for hardware removal, scar tissue clean out (debridement) and/or arthroscopic assessment following the primary ACLR
- Have been cleared for unrestricted activities by the orthopedic surgeon who performed the subsequent operation, if an additional subsequent operation following the primary ACLR has been performed
- Have not had a graft failure (e.g., ACL re-injury)
- Have not had multiple ACLR
Healthy participant
To qualify to participate as a healthy participant, you need to:
- Have no history of ACL injury
- Have no history of low back, hip, knee, or ankle surgery
