Reporting research results to study participants: Lessons learned across three research cohorts
Diana Rohlman, PhD will discuss her extensive experience in reporting back research results (RBRR) to study participants, drawing from her work with pregnancy cohorts and environmental exposure studies where over 90% of participants requested their individual results. Her presentation will explore effective methods for communicating complex environmental exposure data to participants, including strategies for simplifying technical information, addressing participant concerns, and increasing environmental health literacy, while highlighting how this practice has led to positive behavioral changes and improved participant engagement in research studies.
In-person: Hallie E. Ford Center room 115
Remote via Zoom
Speaker
Diana Rohlman, PhD is an Associate Professor and Senior Researcher at Oregon State University, where she earned her PhD in Environmental and Molecular Toxicology studying chemical effects on the immune system. She currently directs the Community Engagement Core at the OSU Environmental Health Sciences Core Center and co-leads research translation projects through the OSU Superfund Research Program Center, focusing on the intersection of toxicology, public health, and research translation. Her work emphasizes environmental health literacy and community-engaged research, particularly with Indigenous and historically underrepresented communities, where she studies environmental pollutants and their health impacts. Rohlman has developed innovative assessment tools, including the Water Environmental Literacy Level Scale (WELLS), and teaches courses such as “Closing the Gap – Where Science Meets the Media”. Her commitment to science communication and community engagement has made her a leading voice in translating complex environmental health research for public understanding.
