Kinesiology - General, BS
San Mateo Union High School District, Adult Transition Program at College of San Mateo
What inspired or interested you about your field of study? And why did you choose Oregon State University?
My career in special education inspired me to pursue kinesiology. I was working with a young man who uses a wheelchair and frequently brought him to the gym. It felt amazing to work with him and see his progress over time. I taught him different transfer techniques and a variety of exercises, which helped him learn to stand for the first time!
I chose OSU because the faculty was by far the most supportive in helping me get started, compared to the California State Universities I considered.
What are you doing in your internship?
I assist my students (adults, 18-22 with individual education plans) in enrolling and participating in physical education classes, as well as in job coaching. My job is to find creative ways to strengthen relationships between the college, my program, and the district. I attend classes with my students (all of whom take PE, and I am the "PE guy") and assist professors in administering assessments and setting up classes.
What do you see as the greatest value of your internship?
I take great joy in knowing that I am not just an educator. I am the bridge by which my students and program connect to the deeper community at the College of San Mateo. My internship program, run by my supervisor, credentialed teacher Jared Abbott, was recently awarded a statewide grant for innovation in education, in part due to the relationships we facilitated.
What do you think of your experience at OSU/in the college so far? Any stand-out experiences?
My OSU experience has been amazing so far! The work is challenging, but the staff has been the most supportive and responsive I’ve experienced. The difference is astounding.
What are your post-college dreams/plans?
I would love to become a teacher of Adapted Physical Education at the adult level.
