What inspired or interested you about your field of study? And why did you choose OSU/the college?

I have always been interested in leading people to live healthier lives. My passion for nutrition led me to Oregon State University to pursue a degree in public health. OSU's Ecampus courses have given me the opportunity to study from home a majority of the time while also taking care of my family.

What are you doing in your internship and/or what is your main project?

During my internship, I have been involved in a variety of projects that relate to community well-being. I was the event coordinator for a community 5k at a recreation site that had been recently revitalized. We had over 400 participants run or walk the course and around 25 volunteers.

What do you see as the greatest value of your public health internship?

Being able to make change in the community takes a collaborative approach. I have learned that when organizations can come together to support an initiative, measurable progress can be made. Some of the most rewarding work has been building relationships in the community and finding ways to foster growth and a healthier environment.

What do you think of your experience at Oregon State? Any stand-out experiences?

My experience at OSU has been extremely rewarding. Not only have I learned so much about the field of public health, but I feel equipped to excel in the workplace upon graduation.

One of the highlights of my program has been studying about the social determinants of health in London. It was such a unique experience that allowed me to see into the culture of health in another society with a group of 20 other passionate students.

Have you received a scholarship? If so, how has it affected your life and your studies?

The College of Health has been instrumental in my academic success. I've received several scholarships that have helped me focus on my studies and support my family.

I'm honored to have been selected for the following scholarships:

  • Underriner Family Endowed Scholarship in Public Health (twice)
  • June E. & G. Truxton Ringe Scholarship (twice)
  • Cynthia W.H. Fang Memorial Scholarship
  • Warren & Frederica Schad Scholarship for Undergraduates
  • John W. & E. Roxie Howlett Education Scholarship

What are your post-college dreams/plans?

I plan to continue my work in the Douglas County area. I want to find a role that I can excel in and be a part of making the community a healthier and more resilient place to live.
