HDFS 201 Contemporary Families in the U.S.

What an interesting time to be studying contemporary families in the United States! Currently, there are numerous issues before us, at the national and local levels, that have important implications for families: the separation of immigrant children and parents; marriage equality; housing and food insecurity; and caring for older family members, to name just a few. In HDFS 201, we consider the diversity of families and the many ways in which families are influenced by social structures and political processes. As well, we explore our own experiences as members of families and how our experiences are shaped by age, social class, race and ethnicity, sexual identity, gender and culture.

HDFS 240 Human Sexuality

Sexuality is a fundamental, natural aspect of human identity and experience across the life course. And yet, we are surrounded by mixed messages about what is natural and acceptable regarding how we express our sexuality. In HDFS 240, we will explore the physiological, psychological, social and historical influences on sexuality.

HDFS 313 Adolescent Development

Whether it was two years ago or two (or more!) decades ago, you most likely remember what it was like to be a teenager. Adolescence is an intense and complex period of human development when our bodies, minds and social relationships are undergoing tremendous transformation. Join us in HDFS 313 to learn about the ways in which adolescent development is both a universal and unique phenomenon, the experiences that are considered “normal,” as well as the challenges that many young people face.

HDFS 314 Adult Development and Aging

What does it mean to be an adult? When does adulthood begin and how does it progress over the many decades that most of us will experience as we travel through the life course? In what ways do we change and stay the same? How are our experiences of development and aging in adulthood shaped by who we are and the contexts in which we live? How are development and aging related – and distinct – processes? In this course we will explore these juicy questions – and many more! – about the complex, multi-faceted topic of adult development and aging. And you might also learn something new about yourself!
