Youth and Young Adults
Hallie E. Ford Center
Research Core
We empower youth to strengthen their development, support behaviors and settings that promote their resilience, and reduce vulnerability for a successful transition to adulthood.
Research Focus and Recent Contributions
Our research explores the critical role of play, physical activity, and sport in the cognitive, social, and emotional development of youth. We investigate how these activities can foster resilience, mental health, and positive developmental outcomes, especially in low-income and high-risk environments.
Quality of Recess and Physical Activity in Schools
We have conducted extensive studies on the impact of recess quality on children's development. Our findings highlight the importance of structured and engaging recess activities in promoting physical health, social skills, and academic performance. By collaborating with schools, we aim to implement evidence-based practices that enhance the recess experience for all students.
Mental Health and Sport
Our research has shown that participation in sports can significantly improve mental health outcomes for youth. We focus on identifying the specific benefits of sports involvement, such as reduced anxiety and depression, improved self-esteem, and enhanced social connections. Special attention is given to supporting girls and youth from under-resourced areas, ensuring they have access to positive sport experiences.
Supporting Underserved Communities
We are committed to understanding the unique challenges faced by youth in low-income and high-risk environments. Our studies examine how play and physical activity can serve as protective factors, fostering resilience and positive development. We work closely with community organizations to develop programs that address these challenges and promote healthy lifestyles.
Policy and Program Development
Based on our research findings, we contribute to the development of policies and programs that support the well-being of youth and young adults. Our goal is to influence local, state, and national initiatives that prioritize physical activity, mental health, and overall development. We advocate for resources and support systems that create healthier environments for young people.
