Cynthia Mojica publishes study on improving follow-up colonoscopy care

Congratulations to Cynthia Mojica, associate professor of health promotion and health behavior, on the publication of new research focused on improving follow-up care after abnormal colorectal cancer screening results.

Published in the Journal of Cancer Prevention, the study examines how federally qualified health centers and community gastroenterology practices coordinate referrals and complete colonoscopies — particularly for patients with abnormal fecal test results. Through interviews with healthcare staff and providers, the research highlights communication gaps and system barriers that can delay care for low-resource populations.

The findings underscore the need for stronger collaboration between primary care and specialty practices and offer recommendations to improve referral systems and support timely colonoscopy completion.
