Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of systems theory to facilitate more robust and rigorous program design, implementation and evaluation in the SFDP field. Given the gap between micro-level program successes and macro-level change, a need exists to explore systems theories as a way to promote integration across various sectors of development and peace work generally, and SFDP specifically. In an effort to do so, a brief overview of the key issues in the SFDP field is given, highlighting the need for a systems approach. Next, an overview of systems theories is discussed, with a particular focus on the structural, attitudinal, and transactional model of peace building (Ricigliano, 2012). Then, current SFDP theories and models are discussed within the context of systems theories. Finally, commentary from SFDP practitioners is provided as it relates to the role of sport in promoting a more holistic approach to development.
