The College of Public Health and Human Sciences is currently hiring several Peer Advisors to serve as representatives for the College during the academic year of 2017-2018.

This position will work for the Office of Student Success, which is located in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (CPHHS). The Office of Student Success provides support and services to PHHS students in the following areas: academic advising, internships, study abroad, career development, graduate programs admissions, and accreditation and assessment.

This position will act as CPHHS ambassadors to OSU students, prospective students, parents, the campus community and the larger community, informing these groups about CPHHS academic programs. This will be accomplished via various events: START, orientations, campus visits, tours, workshops and other events. This position will also provide clerical support for the office, as well as advise undergraduate and prospective students either by phone or on a walk-in basis.



  • Peer advising for prospective and current students and office support. Scheduling advising appointments using Microsoft Outlook and Salesforce. Provide support and assistance with online registration, forms, S/U classes, etc. Direct students to an appropriate point of contact for each student support service area.
  • Support advising of prospective and current students about major selection as well as with information regarding each school and the majors/options within them:
    • Human Development and Family Sciences
    • Kinesiology
    • Nutrition
    • Public Health
  • Be a college representative at all New Student Orientations (START) in Summer, Winter and Spring, as well as other on-campus visitation programs (like Fall Preview, Beaver Open House, Sprint Preview, tours), etc. Assist at the College's events: Fall Welcome Picnic, Mom's Weekend, Dad's weekend, and others. Assist at First Year Workshops and change of major sessions in Fall, Winter and Spring.
  • Assist with general office project using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) and/or Qualtrics.
  • Correspond using email and voice mail with prospective and current students regarding registration and future attendance at OSU.
  • Material maintenance. Ensure forms such as major sheets, the Change of Major form and petition forms are properly printed and available for students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a current full-time undergraduate student in the College of Public Health & Human Sciences (Post baccalaureate students are not eligible).
  • Must have a cumulative OSU GPA of 2.5 upon application deadline as well as maintaining a cumulative OSU GPA of 2.5 throughout the duration of the position.
  • Must have completed at least one term in College of Public Health and Human Sciences (CPHHS) with an OSU GPA.
  • Must posses excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to effectively present and communicate to audiences of all sizes.
  • Must be able to demonstrate initiative, dependability, discipline, creativity and self-confidence.
  • Must be able to respond quickly with correct information.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to set up and tear down events.
  • Must complete FERPA training immediately upon hiring.
  • Must be able to attend all training sessions and monthly staff meetings. The week before Connect week is a three day training session.
  • Must have a Social Security card upon hiring.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Previous office or customer service experience, either in a business or academic environment.
  • Knowledge of CPHHS majors and academic regulations.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher).
  • Leadership experience and skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Experience studying abroad.
  • Extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Ability to work part or all of the summer term.

Period of Service

  • Position begins around February 16, 2017.
  • Training period: Winter term 2017.  All Peer Advisors will be required to attend and participate in all training sessions and staff meetings.
  • All Peer Advisors are required to attend Fall term training sessions (TBA – historically the week prior to CONNECT Week). It is a three day training session.
  • All Peer Advisors are required to attend a monthly meeting. (TBA)
  • All Peer Advisors are required to begin their regular work schedule, 1-week prior to classes beginning for Fall term 2017 (CONNECT WEEK).
  • Part-time summer hours and winter /spring break work hours are available.


Time Commitment

The time commitment per week is approximately 4-12 hours throughout the academic year, with additional hours during the Summer term. Peer Advisors will receive a definite work schedule for each term. The Office Manager will plan the work schedule around the student’s academic schedule. Peer Advisors will be asked to work additional hours to help with university recruiting events such as Beaver Open House (Saturday event), Kaleidoscope, Spring visits and Connect Week and other events that occur during the academic year. The time spent in the office is primarily used for helping students with on-line registration, supporting students’ advising needs, scheduling advising appointments, as well as various other clerical duties.
