H 511 Community, Culture and Global Health
I am an instructor in the Global Health Program in the School of Biological and Population Health Sciences at Oregon State University. In previous work I have examined health effects in people who are exposed to environmental contaminants. I conducted exposure assessments to understand the degree of exposure, mainly to pesticides, in rural West African farmers.
Currently my research seeks to understand the magnitude of exposure to the social determinants of health (SDH) – the conditions where people are born, grow, live, work and age – and the effects on individual and population health. An understanding of the SDH, particularly among the most vulnerable populations such as children, women, the elderly, refugees, and the incarcerated is critical if we are to reduce the disparities in health found in these population groups.
