Research/Career Interests:

Dr. Thorburn has examined the influence of social, cultural, and healthcare factors on health behavior and healthcare utilization in diverse populations. Her current interests focus on discrimination in healthcare, its effects on the healthcare and health-related behavior of disadvantaged populations, and its contribution to disparities in health and healthcare.  She is currently Principal Investigator on an NCI-funded study designed to characterize the nature and role of stigma in the experience of survivorship, as well as identify modifiable factors that could lessen stigma’s negative impact, from the perspective of survivors of breast, prostate, and lung cancer living in rural areas. She has studied discrimination in healthcare with diverse populations, in different healthcare contexts, and using different methods. She conducts quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research.
