Research/Career Interests:

Dr. Thorburn has examined the influence of social, cultural, and healthcare factors on health behavior and healthcare utilization in diverse populations. Her current interests focus on discrimination in healthcare, its effects on the healthcare and health-related behavior of disadvantaged populations, and its contribution to disparities in health and healthcare. She was recently Principal Investigator on an NCI-funded study to explore the influence of discrimination, medical mistrust, and other social, cultural, and health care system factors on breast and cervical cancer screening among Hmong women living in Oregon. She has studied discrimination in healthcare with diverse populations, in different healthcare contexts, and using different methods. Her previous research also includes studies of the social and cultural influences on sexual and reproductive health, including HIV prevention, and the acceptability of reproductive technologies and HIV prevention methods. She conducts quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research.

Sheryl Thorburn is Professor and Co-Director of the School of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She received her Ph.D. in Health Behavior and Health Education in 1993 from the School of Public Health at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she received her MPH in Behavioral Sciences in 1990 from the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.  She joined the OSU faculty in 2002.
