Research Interests

Marie is a public health researcher with over 30 years of experience conducting research focused on the sexual and reproductive health of young adults. She has published widely in the area of risk and prevention of unintended pregnancy and STIs among high-risk women, men and couples and the influence of relationship and contextual factors on protective behaviors and sexual risk-taking. She has been the recipient of many research grant awards, as well as the 2008 Carl Schultz Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health (PFPRH) from the PFPRH Section of APHA. With funding from NICHD, her current research includes work to further understanding of HIV acquisition/transmission by increasing knowledge regarding the intersection between reproductive behavior and HIV prevention. The goal of her recently funded 5 -year CDC grant is to evaluate the expansion of Medicaid and delivering of Medicaid services through the Coordinated Care Organization model on the health of Medicaid-eligible women of reproductive age, mothers, and infants in Oregon. She is dedicated to the use of research findings to inform policies and practices that improve the health of young adult women and men.
