Research/Career Interests:

The overall goal of my research is to address childhood obesity disparities and promote obesity prevention using community-engaged research approaches and an awareness of policy impacts. My interests cover two main areas, which both relate to the early childhood period. (1) I am fortunate to work in partnership with multiple American Indian communities on obesity prevention for families with young children and am seeking to better understand challenges these families face with regards to consuming healthy foods. I work with both urban and rural communities, where little is known about dietary intake, food security, and other related factors within households in these communities. (2) Early care and education settings are becoming increasing recognized as an important area for obesity prevention and nutrition-related interventions. I am interested in examining the nutrition environment in these settings, including food-related policies, and the relationship of this environment to child health in underserved communities.

Biography

Dr. Tomayko received her doctorate in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois studying the effects of protein supplementation on health outcomes in hemodialysis patients. After working with chronically ill individuals, she sought to promote nutrition as a health prevention strategy and engaged in obesity prevention work as a Molecular and Applied Nutrition Training Program postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In this capacity, she focused on American Indian and other underserved communities. Dr. Tomayko is also a registered dietitian and has completed fellowships to better understand the impact of policy on health and disease prevention (American Society for Nutrition Science Policy Fellowship, Mirzayan Science and Technology Fellowship through the National Academies).
