Although most individuals with disabilities are capable of participating in and enjoying a healthy lifestyle, there are a number of health related concerns, including:
- Low levels of physical activity
- Increased risk for obesity
- Increased disparities in health
- Increased risk of chronic diseases
Graduate students in OSU’s Movement Studies in Disabilities program offer the following tips to promote physical activity for individuals with disabilities:
- MAKE IT FUN!!
- Decrease television and video game time
- Monitor success using pedometers and activity logs
- Promote healthy eating habits – include more fruits and vegetables and lower sugar and fat intake
- Encourage participation with family and friends
Our program is committed to promoting physical activity for individuals with disabilities across the lifespan. Through increasing opportunities to be active, individuals with disabilities can create healthy habits that will enable them to limit their risk for a variety of health related conditions and promote a better quality of life.
